Twitter, which has just celebrated its 10th Birthday (Happy Birthday Twitter!), is what we know as the social networking platform for real time conversation and discussion. Through social listening, twitter offers valuable opportunities to hear what the audience are talking about, asking and discussing and get involved.

But, what to tweet?

The challenge I find on twitter is not just writing compelling content to attract new followers but to write compelling content to engage and inspire your current followers to retain their loyalty. I find that as long as you are posting regularly, content that is relevant to your target audience and unique to your business then you will achieve valuable results.

So, if you need some inspiration, here are 5 lessons I have learned over twitters 10 years to consider when creating a twitter content strategy;

1. Keep It Short And Sweet

They say good things come in small packages and with a 120 character word count this couldn’t be truer on Twitter. A concise tweet can make a big impact. Focussed tweets about something specific are more effective than trying to communicate multiple things.

2. Include Images/Visuals

People are 3x more likely to engage with content on twitter that contain images or videos. Adding something visual to your post adds personality and offers the audience more value and therefore more of a reason to engage with you. Don’t be afraid to get creative, if you can’t choose just one image, create a collage to upload or even think about an infographic.

3. Use Relevant Hashtags

Hashtags can be a very powerful tool to help expand the reach of your tweet and tap into relevant conversations to attract more interest, followers and engagement. Think about keywords that are relevant to not only your tweet but also to your business and who you want to reach. It is worth noting that best practices recommend using two hashtags per tweet.

I find its often beneficial to identify popular events to incorporate into your hashtags that you can link to your business in a unique way. Every day, personal and wider cultural events can offer interesting talking points and offer your audience the chance to engage with you.

4. Start the Conversation

Asking questions or running polls on twitter can be a great way of interacting with the audience. Bringing them into the conversation and finding out their thoughts and opinions offers a greater opportunity for engagement. Open ended questions or use twitter polls to survey specific responses are a great way to start the conversation!

5. Retweet and Reply

Retweeting relevant content and replying to tweets can create a powerful presence on Twitter for you. Positive customer feedback, helpful articles and insights that align with your business brand and tone of voice are all relevant pieces of content that you can amplify.

It’s important to remember though that retweets reflect your business and need to align with your purpose and values to keep everything consistent. Being responsive and replying to messages can be effective in building relationships and nurturing leads.
