It is currently an exciting time for the Customer Engagement team at Made to Engage, with our clients increasingly asking for solutions that bring together our content, data and SEO skills to engage customers in a personalised way. When our marketing intern Emma Kennedy joined the team, she was in the mix right from the start. Since then we’ve supported Emma in building her skills and taking a first step towards a fulfilling career in digital marketing. In the first of a three-part series looking at how we're developing tomorrow's talent, we asked Emma to outline 6 things she has learnt from her first few months at Made to Engage.
I remember when the phone call came through… I was joining Made to Engage! As a third year Marketing BSc student at Ulster University, it felt like a new door was opening for me - I was entering the world of work! Several months later I swapped post-exam lie-ins for a daily city centre commute to Made to Engage where I've joined the Customer Engagement team for my placement year. I’ve only been here a few months, but it’s been brilliant. Here are my top 6 useful things I learnt when starting out at Made to Engage.
Push yourself every day to make a difference. Made to Engage is an ambitious, inspiring and incredibly passionate place to work which is full of creative people. It’s a fast-paced but enjoyable environment in which you can work across a huge variety of industries and really drive your career in direction you want it to go in.
Seize opportunities to develop new skills right away. Within my first few weeks in the role I was encouraged to get stuck into a few courses on Google Academy - I now have certifications in both Google Analytics and Google Ads. It’s clear that Made to Engage is a place where I can grow professionally and really add value to the company.
Your first-day jitters will soon pass when you realise people want you to succeed. When I joined, everyone was incredibly friendly and happy to help if I needed guidance on anything. A welcome lunch with the CE team was planned for my arrival during the middle of the first week which immediately made me feel part of the team and was a great way to get to know everyone.
Agency life is very different to university life, but you’ll soon adjust. There isn’t always a fixed schedule of tasks to accomplish here. Everyone works in an agile way and adapts to meet changing client demands. This was a little difficult for me as I’m used to knowing what I’m working on and planning each day out carefully. However, I’ve begun to adapt to this new way of working!
You’ll enjoy brainstorming sessions once you get over your nerves! During my first brainstorming session for a large finance organisation everyone started rattling off their ideas. It was an unfamiliar experience to me which was a little overwhelming but not enough to scare me off. It was inspiring and it was clear there is a high degree of knowledge and expertise within the company. By the end I was joining in with my own suggestions!
Build meaningful relationships to evolve and grow. When I first met the CE team I thought, "Here are my marketing partners in crime for the next 12 months!" It’s great to work with a team with such varied skills - each person has their own specialisms. I’m already providing feedback and ideas that may help in their areas of expertise. The team know that I want to provide impactful work and help me complete my tasks to a high level.
